Can I upgrade 2017 with new Apple Play / Touch2?

Post by Balliol » Mon Oct 05, 2020 6:57 pm

Hi,

I have my own 2017 C-HR which I adore - having previously driven Prius & Auris company cars for years.
Sadly I have the basic model, so I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade / retrofit my limited media unit to an Apple Play / Touch 2 unit?

When I approached my Toyota dealer where I bought the car, they said "No - but do you want to part exchange for a newer model"!

It's quite a low mileage car (11,000) and I'm retired on a fixed budget, so I'm going to decline the dealership's solution!

Thanks.

I did say not easy eh :-) Replacing a head unit is quite a challenge I'd say...

the previous head units are running QNX (Blackberry) which in theory is capable of Mobile support (car play/AA) could the CPU could cope with this ? Head units don't seem very responsive, and whether Toyota have even tested this? Probably with no success re the change of hardware on the 2020 models.

If this was possible i'm sure someone would of done it by now.

A head unit swap-out option from Toyota would be a nice option depending on the cost, there are many features missing from the 2019 CHR compared to the RAV unit of the same year. The My-toyota app seems pretty pointless , does a lot more linked to a RAV.

These head units get very hot to the touch! Not sure they’re up to the job tbh.
