Bonnet stone chips

Post by adn1962 » Sun Apr 05, 2020 8:52 pm

I washed and polished mine today and noticed a recent stone chip on bonnet. On closer inspection, I could see a couple more that had been repaired by previous owner.

My previous Toyotas were prone to stone chipping easily, but thought newer models would have been sorted by a thicker coverage. Obviously, not the case.

Has anyone purchased any stone chip repair? If so, what did you buy and was it any good?

Another option would be to have it re-sprayed once this lockdown is lifted.

I got 2 large chips to the bonnet last year. Got the touch up from Toyota and kept touching it up to build the paint level up. Looks ok.

I had a nasty chip on my rear wheel arch and 1 on the front bumper. But took out that insurance toyota was doing. Called them out and they sorted chips out. Took them 6hrs. Cost me a tenner. But insurance cost me 300 quid for 3yrs. But notice got couple of more chips and a scuff on front wing that looks like shopping trolley damage. So will be calling them out once all this virus lockdown over. Think insurance has saved me a few quid.

Understand about the insurance offered, but I don’t expect bodywork to damage so easily. You could say these issues should be covered under 3 year paint warranty.

Paint warranty covers problems from the metal out, not stone chips and the like.

I would recommend a 'chips away' company or similar to fix. Worth sucking up the cost and getting a professional job done as paint sticks and other DIY attempts never really do it justice. Always worth getting a quote from a local/mobile company IMO.

So once it’s been done, what is best method to protect paintwork. Is there a polish or similar which helps?

Only real way is to have the vulnerable places covered with a plastic film, there are a few companies that specialise in this. They will normally cover front of bonnet, edge of wings and wing mirrors or more if you want.
