Have you tried another phone yet, either iPhone or preferably Android to see if that narrows down the issue? Or possibly a Bluetooth adaptor in case there is some weird connectivity problem between the usb socket and the head unit. Those would be my first steps to try.

 

Just coming back here to say I have fixed this after MUCH effort, so I am going to leave the how-to here for the internet to come and find.

The main thing is you need to update the firmware on the CHR unit. This is not as simple as it may sound. The last update was from 2021, it appears that many cars don't have any update older than 2019.

The first thing you need to do is check which audio system version you have - you can find this in the setup menu (click on software update and it should list it at the top of the screen).

Once you have that number, go to this thread:

and follow the link to download the right software for your version (mine is the 17TDT2EU-DA31)

You'll end up with a ZIP folder. Click on it to de-compress it and you'll end up with a file which has a .kwi extension.

Right, you now need to get this into your car. And this is the bit which took me ages. The CHR USB connection is archaic. First thing, you need to format your USB memory stick into EX FAT or FAT 32 format, or else it won't recognise it. Worse still, it ONLY worked when I dug out an old 1GB memory card. It didn't like the 16GB or 32GB ones I tried. I suspect it doesn't like anything above 2GB. A real pain, but it is what it is.

Once you have found a low capacity card, pop the file on it and insert it into the CHR USB slot. Go to Setup on the menu, and scroll down to software update. It should recognise your USB stick, just follow the instructions from there, and it takes a matter of minutes to install the update.

Once it's installed, all the CarPlay bugs appear to have disappeared.

What a palaver! You said it used to work and then just gave up suddenly which seems strange that this firmware update fixed it unless it was also ios 18 which wasn't compatible with the old firmware anymore which does seem plausible. Glad you got it sorted anyway as it will probably help others with the same issue.

 

yep, my strong suspicion is iOS 18 gave up and couldn't work with the old software. My understanding is that the 2021 update was not insignificant, and you'd expect software developers (in Toyota's case, Panasonic I think) to stay up to date with whatever Apple pushes out. It kind of makes sense therefore that at some point the old Firmware would stop interacting well with apple software. I hope this helps other too, like you say!

 

I have had this problem for about 2 months now & it did seem to start after an apple update. I can’t end calls and the call timer just runs one & I am unable to end the call. I always seem to have to reboot the whole display. My local dealer is checking with Japan to see if they can carry out & update. cheers, Dave - Devon

 

Same issue here, I tried the procedure and once I start downloading the update in my car there’s an error message that tells me that my car doesn’t support the 1170 update. I have a 2020 chr, don’t know what to do, I hate having to disconnect each time someone calls me because it freezes. Someone in some thread talked about renaming the file? Any ideas? Kinda desperate.
