Heads up - there is a map update available today for the Smart Connect systems to download from the Toyota E store on line & its FOC.

You need to sign in to your My Toyota account via a PC browser then go to the E store - your looking for Toyota Smart Connect Plus Map Update Autumn 2022.

You also need 2 x pieces of information from your vehicle before you can download the update.

You need your Map Service Code which is found by going to Navigation> Map Update> Map Data.

You also need your Map Update ID which is found by going to Navigation> Map Update> Map Data Info.

You have to fill in your details but at checkout its £0.00

Its just under 21GB download zipped file size.

You need a USB stick of 32 GB size formatted to FAT32 to extract it to & transfer it to the car.

There are installation instructions on how to set up your USB stick but you need to scroll down to look at the MM21 ones which are for Smart Connect.

Make a note of your licence key shown on your PC screen as you will need to input in on the touch screen.

Installed the update this evening.

Insert your USB stick in to the port, select Map Update via the infotainment menu - it asks you to type in your licence key.
Enter the key, press ok & then when you next power cycle the ignition the update starts.
Takes around 30 minutes to complete according to the progress bar - you can still listen to the radio while the update runs in the background.

Something to do over the Easter break!

Can you start it and go for a drive or will confuse matters?

This update is for Smart Connect equipped C-HR only so 22MY onwards with navigation.

Yes once the map update has started you can drive the vehicle, press the musical note & go back to the radio.

Remember to wait for the map update to display it finished & it's ok to remove the USB stick before switching the unit or vehicle off.

The map update takes approximately half an hour to install.

I thought all the updates on this system were done OTA ??

Will have to take a look at this over the 4 day weekend.

Thanks..

Firmware updates are done over the air via the DCM.

Its looking like mapping updates are being done via a USB stick.

This map update is nearly 21GB to download, I doubt Toyota / Lexus would like the bill for all that data usage for each vehicle plus if the download got interpreted.

To be fair I wasn't even expecting a user installable mapping update for the Smart Connect system so this was a pleasant surprise.
Downloaded it onto USB, sadly it froze the system halfway through, with an error code and a message to contact dealer. At the dealers this morning
Update has corrupted the system. They need to order a new system on a USB, will take 2 weeks to come and they will need the car for a day. Great
@asinrute , what year is your car ?? I'm worried about trying mine now, as my OH would be knackered if she can't have the music on. Or is it only the nav part that's corrupted ??

Same as yours it’s a 22 reg, it’s just the maps/nav that’s corrupted. Music is fine as is CarPlay so you’ve still got nav that way. Dealership says there have been very few problems with with this new system

Windows PC or Mac used?
Mac, in retrospect I wonder if that was the problem because when I looked in the downloads folder it was already unzipped, so I didn’t ever see the zip file!!
I'm not a Mac user but I know over the years across various forums when someone reports a corrupted map update install issue often it's traced back to a Mac being used.

You could try preparing the USB stick again but at the end try running the CleanMyDrive2 app before you eject the USB stick from your Mac as this usually removes the extra files a Mac likes to add to a USB stick that can upset vehicle map updates.

Remember the infotainment system needs the USB stick formatted to FAT32 as well.
I had a CHR when the they first came out and kept it for 6 years. I updated the maps twice a year with no problems I have just changed car and this is the first time I have tried to update the new Toyota Connect. Everything seemed fine, I downloaded it, reformatted the USB, keeping to FAT32, plugged it into the car, it asked for the code which it accepted then it seemed like it was downloading fine, till after about 15 mins it came up with an error code and message to contact dealer.
Successful update for me !!

Excellent 👍

Be interesting to see how often Toyota release new mapping updates 🤔

6 monthly or yearly would be my guess.
Successful update for me !!
Good to hear, did you use Windows or Mac to download the update?

I used a Windows PC to download the file. Then Winzip to unzip it to the usb stick.

Basically the same here but I used 7 Zip instead as that what was shown in the installation instructions.
It's hardly a problem with the operating system or the zip tool.
Most troubles are coming from the file system on the USB stick. And that's often hidden by the OS. So make sure you're using a stick just big enough to accommodate the content of the archive or create a partition that's just bigger than the content. A double check it's FAT32 may be tricky, but double no matter the OS.
A damaged USB stick it's also a big PITA. Most OSs are pushing for a fast format and that cannot mark bad cells on the stick. A full format will take lots of time but it will identify those bad batches. And it will save lots of troubles.
