Well, after owning my beloved CH-R Dynamic hybrid for 35 days and covering 2800 miles, today I faced the nightmare of a "Breakdown".
After traveling 50 or so miles to my first customer of the day. I pulled up at the security gate, locked her up by touching the dooring handle and went to sign in to get past the barrier.
On my return, put my hand behind the door handle to unlock and nothing! Pulled the handle and nope she wasn't having it! So out comes the key fob and unlocked her manually. Got in, put my boot on the brake pressed the start button and nothing! Scratched my head a few times and tried it again..... again nothing. Got out, tried to lock her as usual by the old sausage finger on the door handle, nothing! She would only lock and unlock via the fob. Tried again to start but nothing. Angharad had died
The trusty AA were called to save the day and after waiting 2 hours, the patrolman turned up with a multimeter and a startercharger. Then after spending 10 minutes admiring the engine bay he said. I ain't got a clue, it'll have to go to Toyota. No shit Sherlock went through my head. But I just smiled and said ok. Then he dropped the bombshell - I cant tow you because its an automatic. Of course everything was locked up, Steering, Brakes and stuck in Park. Arghhhhh!!!!!
After a phone call to HQ he then informed me it would be another two and half hours before a recovery truck could get to me. Oh well I thought, it'll give me time to actually read the owners hand book. 10 minutes later - lightbulb!! search google to see if anyone else has had the same problem, but unfortunately no. I then found a youtube clip of starting a prius with a flat keyfob by holding the fob on the start button, but mine was working. So thought sod it i'll give it a go.
Jesus Christ on a bike, it worked! Angharad had been resurrected. It felt like easter Monday. Then I thought do I turn her off and try to start her normally or keep her running. I pressed the button and off she went. With crossed fingers and tight bum cheeks I pressed the start button to fire her up.......Nothing!! dead again. Held the fob on the start button Poof!! the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. A phone call to Toyota and another to the AA to cancel the recovery truck I took the chance of driving her to the garage.
I have to say my local Toyota dealer were absolutely fantastic, slotted me in and about a hour and a half later Angharad was fixed. Apparently the "Comfort Start" had switched itself off???? But now she was back to normal so I didn't really care and now it was catch up for my day. Two stop starts later and she's gone again. Phoned the garage and as its a "Technical problem" that they've never experienced before. I have to wait for the Toyota technical boffins to find out why this is happening.
So if your CH-R suddenly wont start, try holding the key fob on the power button. Also if you have your key in a case take it out, it wouldn't work in the case on mine.
I'll keep you updated on what happens next.
