High engine idle speed

Quite surprised at how high the engine revs on idle at traffic lights or start up.
What is other poeple's experience?

Hi,

I can only comment on my 1.2 petrol thar idles at just under 800 rpm.

However from time to time my wife's Prius does idle at a higher speed than I would expect but as there is no rev counter cannot give you a actual figure.
Hybrid engines do not idle, unless you have a fully charged battery in cold weather with heating on.
You hear the system charging the battery which should be visible on Energy monitor screen with animated arrows, going from the engine to the battery.
Mine idles all the time if I have the heater on wether the battery is full or not. Same on the test one I drove.
Mine only idles when petrol engine is in use if battery is not sufficiently charged. If the battery is low the petrol engine kicks in to regenerate then the car appears to be idling at higher revs, this was the same on my old Lexus Ct200.
If the car is running on battery power it doesn't idle.
When the heating is and the cabin temperature is to low the engine will run when idle. Or when the battery is low. Otherwise the engine will stop.
This is the same as my previous Auris.
Also it is running when charging not idling. I believe I read that they picked an RPM level that is optimum for fuel efficiency. I agree though it can sound odd but you soon get used to it.

Seems counterintuitive to have a higher RPM for better fuel efficiency.
mine does this once my battery is low. it suddenly sounds like your an old man reversing out of a space in a diesel car. I would guestimate 2000rpm
