Hello! New owner of 2022 C-HR... a few initial observations !

Hi - nice to find a UK forum for the C-HR.

I recently bought (from a Toyota dealer) a 2022 used 2.0 Excel C-HR (6000 miles).

So far so good but there are a few observations - I guess some of these have been discussed in individual threads previously here so forgive me on that

Driver seat is electric but frustratingly doesn't have memory functions
The doors can't be set to auto-lock when driving off
The wired android auto connection seems to occasionally drop out (have tried multiple phones and cables)
The brakes seem "grabby" and overly sensitive especially at slow speeds
Lack of modern interior LED ambient lighting generally, including the rear
No rear USB port
Keyfob a bit naff looking for a £30k car
Cleaned the car recently and the fuel filler flap solenoid plunger disappeared inside the car. Have a trip to the dealer planned as a result :-(
Wondered what other observations people have made since ownership.

But broadly it's a great car to drive around in ...!

Cheers

I agree with some of those points.

1) The doors lack of auto locking - it can be done via various aftermarket means.

2) AA Wireless dongle works well with the C-HR & can be hard wired in for stealth install.

3) LED interior light bulbs easy enough to swop over.

Lack of memory on the electric drivers seat is slightly annoying but I can live with it.

The grabby brakes at slow speed is normal for a Toyota hybrid & after a while you will learn the technique for a smooth stop.

Thanks for the reply. Will research that in more detail.

Oh, and the Horn is the lamest horn I've ever heard on a car 😂

I agree with that 😂 the horn is embarrassing to use.

It's a common complaint across the Toyota product range but again can be easily sorted - it's still on my list of things to do.
Only used the horn once, just to hear how limp it was.

Not an issue for me really as can’t remember the last time I actually used it in any car. Did a few advanced driving courses for work, focussed on safety, anti-highjack, escape and evasion etc. (I visit some really ‘interesting’ places for work). Instructors reckoned most people use the horn in moments of road rage, and better to avoid conflict than have to reprimand others
Thank you for making your post as it saves me from having to type pretty much exactly what you have! I don't understand what you mean by the solenoid plunger though hope it doesn't happen to me! I've had mine less than a week, bought from a private seller with 6400 miles(July 2021 registered). Mine is also the 2.0 Excel version and I paid £25,250 which is about £3k less then a dealer would have charged. Could I ask what you paid for yours?
The radar cruise control works well but strangely the pcs doesn't seem to be functioning. I've tested it as much as I dare and come very close to rear-ending stationary cars at the lights as I roll up to them doing 10-15 mph and having to jam the brakes on myself as the automatic brakes don't activate! Apparently, this is a common issue though I haven't had time to search the forum as I've only just joined. I'm guessing I'll have to take it up with the dealership.
I'm also due the 2-year service soon but as Toyota want £370 I might use an authorised garage instead which will charge £230-£265 based on what I can find online.
That AA dongle sounds interesting and for £70 might be worth a shot though can the dealer not enable auto-door locking as other similar Toyotas have that feature?
The suspension's not that great either or maybe it's just that the roads are so poor that you'd need a Bentley to get around without shaking yourself to death!

This might save you £100 but if you’re planning on keeping the car longer term then having it serviced at Toyota extends the OEM warranty up to ten years.
Thats the full warranty, not a third party one with lots of exclusions and deductibles...
That's a very good point but I think that only applies after the car is 3 years old so I would have to get my 2024 service done by Toyota. There is a law which says you can have your car serviced by another (non-Toyota) garage and still maintain the initial 3-year warranty without any penalty. However, I'm not sure if it will show up on the digital service record as displayed on the (otherwise useless!) MyT app which I think is rated 2.8 stars in the Play Store - I think I would give it 1 star only because you can't rate it as zero! I guess I would have to ask the other garage which is within walking distance from me so more convenient.

if you have a hybrid and want to keep your battery's warranty covered you may as well go to the main dealer as that's basically what you are missing out on ,but it does save any future trouble covered

I've only heard of this issue once elsewhere - Toyota dealer service technician can test it with an empty cardboard box of suitable size.

A Toyota main dealer service also includes a hybrid health check which is logged with Toyota Europe, also a Toyota main dealer should use the correct 0w16 engine oil.

can the dealer not enable auto-door locking as other similar Toyotas have that feature?
Not possible, that function just isn't built in to European spec Toyota's - you need a 3rd party solution OR learn to press the button on the drivers door switch control panel.

I originally test drove a Excel spec & found the suspension was much better then the 308 T9 hatch I owned at the time, I also find the GR Sport suspension which is slightly firmer then the rest of the C-HR range also perfectly fine over rough roads & better then the 308 I had before it.

Either find a similar age C-HR to compare it with OR ask the Toyota main dealer to check the suspension when you take it in for the PCS radar concern.
Thanks for all the feedback guys, the garage near me is a Toyota authorised service centre and they do hybrids too but I will check with them before going ahead. The oil shouldn't be a problem as 0w16 is specified and it's not hard to get. I thought about testing with a big cardboard box as there's a YouTube video where someone does that and fails miserably! I've tested with real cars but have chickened out when contact seems imminent!

The AAwireless dongle looks good but how would you hardwire it easily? It would be great to free up the one and only usb port in the whole car for sure:)

Your call, but I would be very surprised if you could skip one and then Toyota would start extending the warranty based on just having the third service with them.
Would guess definitely lose any potential goodwill and might have a struggle if something major went wrong.

Good luck

Surely if car is only 2 years old just book it in for a check under warranty?
If it works then all good, if not the Toyota dealer will fix for free?

I've hardwired it in to mine - it doesn't free up the USB port as the system only supports one port.
All it does is hide the device so it looks cleaner, my visible USB port is now a non functional decoration.

NOTE: Take note of the warning about double checking the part number on your vehicles original USB port if you go ahead with the modification!

That's the whole point of the law, so you can't be held to ransom in the first 3 years! Goodwill from a main dealer doesn't exist these days sadly, it's all about profit.

i had a problem with my Audi TT a few years ago, a few of the leds in the rear centre brake light had failed. Asked dealer to replace and was quoted about £200 for the entire sealed light unit plus labour & vat.
I pounted out it was just out of warranty but I’d always had it serviced there and they agreed to replace for free as a goodwill guesture.

Lucky you, that was a result! I found the blurb from the Toyota website...

Every new Toyota in the UK is eligible to be covered up to ten years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) of Toyota warranty. This is provided through an initial three-year manufacturer warranty followed by up to seven years of service-activated warranty. Terms and conditions apply and can be read here.

For the first three years of your new car’s life, the manufacturer warranty is in place and an owner can have the car serviced wherever they choose. After the expiry of the manufacturer warranty, owners who choose to have their Toyota serviced at an official Toyota centre will benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) of warranty, until your car is either ten years old or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).
As a little update the car's in with Toyota today. They called to say the fuel flap plunger should have a nut on it to stop it falling into the car body. They'll sort under warranty

The intermittent Android Auto they couldn't find any fault, but said they've cleared the 6 previously connected phones from the car to see if that makes a difference. Will monitor that over the coming weeks.

I also mentioned to them the brake calipers are already showing a fair bit of corrosion which is disappointing on a 12 month old £30k car.. I'd have expected Toyota to find a coating to lasted a few years at least...

Weird about the calipers? Mine came from a seaside town and I don't think they're corroded though I will make a point of having a closer look next time I'm out. Can you post a picture here? And I agree the horn is pathetic(I tried mine today as there are so many dozy pedestrians wandering around here, I'll have to fit an upgraded one sometime!), it's a shame they let the car down with something so basic. No memory seat position is also a p.i.t.a!
Wonder if brake caliper corrosion has been caused by aggressive alloy wheel cleaning solutions?
