Collision Detection ?

4053 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Crazy Caroline
How does the collision detection work as I have had it alert me a couple of times but when i try and test it , i.e. brake at last minute nothing goes of and If I hadn't of braked by then, then I can't see how the car would have stopped me in time when it does come into action.
I have it set on the 3 bars so most sensitive but worry if its actually working properly .

It works by radar and camera. The first stage is showing an alert. Second stage is preparing the brakes. If you hit the brakes it will apply more brake pressure as normal. The third stage is auto braking.

Please note that it will try to minimise the crash, it will not always prevent it. Also as soon as you touch the brakes the system wil not do anything any more because the system assumes you are reacting.
I know I've not had it before but Being I have it set to the most sensitive to me its a bit worrying that it doesn't kick in a bit earlier to my tests.
You might be driving to slow, but don't test it... You might end up in a collision. Or test it on a closed property with a piece of foam.

Or just trust it will work ;)
But don't use it as brake system.

If you use adaptive cruise control in the city the car will come to a full stop if the car in front of you comes to a stop.

I went through exactly the same thought process. I'm not sure if it is a case of something in the way I test not matching a real incident but it never worked until I felt I had to brake on testing but in two real world instances, one when a deer suddenly appeared in the road and another where someone had a complete engine seizure in front of me and stopped very abruptly, it has cut in and stopped me. In the latter case my reaction time was just a little slower than its but I'm pretty sure it saved some damage.
I had it go off on me yesterday. Guy ran out in front of me into the road. Car immediately sounded the alarm and brought the car to a total abrupt stop. Scared me AND the guy who ran out.

He later said he hadn't heard me coming. EV mode is apparently good for running people over lol :)

Good to know it works.
EV mode is no good if you get behind horses on a narrow lane either.
