Has anyone installed any aftermarket sound system, keeping the touch 2 factory unit?
The JBL sound system was not available in non hybrid models when I purchased my 1,2T CH-R . I find the (6 speaker) sound system very poor. The headunit has a power draw of 3,6 Amperes so with quick calculations it cannot provide more than 10watts per channel. Also the doors have some cheap paper speakers. As there is no option for an aftermarket headunit to replace the 8 inch screen (americans and australians models can fit any 2din headunit but not the european models), I think the best solution is to install a small digital amplifier that provides at least 4x50 (real)watts that takes high input signal (we don't have RCA outputs ), replace the crappy speakers and maybe a small sub under the front seat or in the trunk.

I think one member in this forum has done that. I would appreciate any advices from people that have done it or intend to do it.

Both solutions do not offer any amplification, do you believe the stock headunit can drive the aftermarket speakers?

I don't know. You can always do it in increments and see if you can improve sound without messing around with the car too much. i.e. start with an active sub and/or tweeters/speakers first and then see if you need an amp or headunit later. I have done the same in the past in other cars and i regret doing it as i added a lot of weight with all the wiring and amp/sub . Personally, I think the C-HR is heavy enough as it is.

Hello
It is possible to replace head unit in EU C-HR (mine is hybrid). I replaced original one with 8'' Joying unit, and I'm very pleased with a result. It took some time to find out how to do that, but the result justifies the time spent . Sound is much better, even with stock speakers, and possibility... well, just like a smartphone, only imagination is a limit. :-D :-D :-D Steering wheel buttons are supported, I even managed to run original reverse camera. Only thing I didn't find out, is how to connect the original microphone, but I installed one I get from Joying, and it is working just fine.
Biggest problem for me was how to fix unit and screen on the correct positions, because there is no brackets to buy, so I had to make them.
I bought single DIN 8'' unit, because it fits in cavity behind original head unit without any problem.
Now I'm in search for a speakers to improve sound quality even more. It looks to me that original speakers were meant for phone conversations, and for people with ear damage to hear ... something. Shame on you Toyota. :p

So, after I upgraded head unit, it is time to upgrade the rest of the sound system.
I decided to replace those pooooor original speakers with Alpine S series speakers, Alpine V series amplifier, and Alpine active under-seat subwoofer.
Well, I think I should be less demanding, as It is not an easy task to do. First of all, 50W RMS can't go through the original wires. And to change wires... well, I managed to change on the rear doors with not so much problem, but on the front... It is absolutely impossible to access the original wire lid. I spent all the afternoon just to install speakers on the rear doors. And have no idea how to change wires on the front, and how to run power cable from engine bay to cabin. I think I need a Red Bull, large one....
